Where’s Your Career Going?

You might find your career in transition through choice, because the time is now right for you to move up a level and develop your career. Alternatively, you might find yourself looking for a new job, not through choice, but because you’ve been made redundant and you need to bounce back from the situation.

The solution in both cases is the same – you need to find the best possible way to present yourself at your best.

Take a look at this three step process that we’ve developed for working with our clients:


If you’re going for an internal promotion, pride is about reminding yourself what you’ve achieved in your current role. When you’ve been made redundant, you need to find a way to express your achievements in clear concise way. Look back at what you’ve achieved and write a list of the things you’re proud of.

Competency based interviews are popular so you have to be prepared with quantified examples of what you’ve achieved. Remember here that less is more. If you answer 12 questions with 12 concise examples you’re more likely to be successful than if you give 8 detailed examples to 8 questions. Why? Because in an interview you will only have about 45 minutes in which to put your case. Giving shorter, concise answers will allow your interviewer to ask more questions, making them feel that they have collected more information about you. In preparation, spend time developing engaging stories that will answer the frequently asked interview questions.


When you’re going for promotion, talk about your current role with enthusiasm. There’s only one thing more contagious than enthusiasm and that’s a lack of enthusiasm. You could be changing jobs because you’ve lost enthusiasm for your current role, but you still need to show your positive side. Don’t put down your current boss or the company.

If you’ve been made redundant, look at it as an opportunity rather than as a crisis. How often in your career do you get to sit back and decide where to go next? This is a rare opportunity for you to take stock and change direction. It’s the chance to align what you love doing with what you do for a living. A question we like to ask is “What are you doing when time flies by?” Find that passion and let it come out.


One dictionary definition of ‘career’ is to move from side to side in an uncontrolled way. Is your career careering out of control or does it have a clear purpose? You are the only person who can create that clear purpose. Other people can help you, but only you can really make the key decisions that you need to make about your career direction. Many people are in their jobs by accident and that’s OK if it’s worked out for the best.

However, it’s important to have total clarity of what your next job and your perfect job look like. It’s about being able to convey this clarity and articulate it in a number of settings, including at interview, when you’re asked why you’re interested in the job. If you can describe exactly what you’re looking for to anyone who asks, they can also help you find that perfect role.

When you’re looking for your ideal job, whether through choice or necessity, don’t treat the situation like a crisis and just look for any job that will help you pay the mortgage. Take your time to connect with your pride, your passion and your purpose, to help you find the perfect job.

  • Surround yourself with positive people. During difficult times, spend your time with friends who energise you and can help you, rather than those who sap your energy


  • Manage your career transition like a project. Do something every day to find that perfect job, but don’t do it all day every day. Take time out to catch up on those DIY projects, spend some time with your family and get some fresh air and exercise


  • Sharpen your skills. Go on that advanced Excel course you’ve been thinking about doing. Read those management books that are collecting dust on the shelf.

You can also ask trusted friends and colleagues about how they think you come across. Do they think you need a haircut or a new suit? Listen to their advice – they’re on your side!
