“Have You Done Much Networking Before?”

This is the question that someone asked me once at a networking breakfast meeting. I replied that I had done a little bit of networking before. When our breakfast was served at our table, I reached into my bag and pulled out a couple of sachets of brown sauce, which I like to have with my cooked breakfast. I know that many venues don’t provide it, so I go prepared and take my own.

“So you’ve done more than just a little bit of networking, haven’t you?!” he said!

Three Top Tips

Here are our three best tips to help introverts get the best from networking:

  • Be prepared. Always take business cards with you. If you don’t have any, go to Vistaprint or larger WHSmith stores which often have a machine that prints them. Whenever you’re networking, you need business cards – it’s just the way it works.
  • Give some thought to how to introduce yourself. Think about what impression you want to leave people with. Spend some time thinking about your key message, the types of clients that you’re looking for, or the help that you’d like to ask for.
  • Remember that you’re not going to die! Just get in there and get started. You usually get a second chance to make a first impression with networking, so if you do mess it up the first time, you can go back and have another go at the next meeting.
