Have You Broken Your New Year’s Resolutions Yet?

Did you set some New Year’s resolutions at the end of last year, or the beginning of this year? How are you getting on with them? Many people struggle to follow through with what they’ve said they’re going to do, or not do. This is possibly because too many of us think how nice it would be stop smoking, lose weight, relax more, look for that new job … without really thinking about how we’re going to achieve it.

Setting resolutions at the start of the New Year is very tempting. We get caught up in the idea of setting new goals and challenging ourselves. Yet how many of us end up getting carried away with what we think we can achieve or do or change or stop doing? Then we look back on our resolutions at the end of the year – or worse, only a couple of months into the New Year – and realise that we are way off target. Why does this happen and what can you do about it?

Size Matters. Were the goals thatyou set yourself just too big? If you’ve never done more than run for the bus, deciding to run a marathon is a huge leap. Jumping from a full time job into running your own business is also a brave thing to do. If the end goal is just too daunting, chances are thatyou’ll find it difficult to find the motivation needed to achieve it. Look at your goal and, if it seems unrealistic, think about how you can set yourself one that is more manageable.

Taking Action. Goals don’t just achieve themselves. Writing down your goal to get a new job or lose weight doesn’t actually make it happen! You need to take specific actions to move you closer to your goals. Look at them and think about what you need to do in order to achieve them. How many interviews do you need to attend? How many times will you need to go to the gym each week?

What’s Your Why? Why do you actually want to achieve a specific goal? Ask yourself why and keep asking – just as a young child would do. Why do you want to earn more money? So that I can have a better income. Why? So that I can afford to go on holiday more. Why? So that I can recharge my batteries on a more regular basis. Why? So that I can become healthier. Why? So that I can get fitter. Why? So that I can have all the energy I want to play with my kids! When you know what your ‘why’ is and when it’s strong enough, you’ll find the motivation you need to get you there.

Reap the Reward. How will you reward yourself when you reach your goal? How will you celebrate? Plan the celebration that you’ll have at the end of the journey, when you can say “I did it” and that will drive you towards your goal.

If you’re struggling with your New Year’s resolutions, go back and look at them, in terms of size, actions, ‘why’ and rewards and you’ll have a much stronger chance of achieving them.
